Marathon des Sables

The Marathon des Sables is a 240 kilometre foot race through the Sahara Desert.

Actually a collection of marathons run over a number of days the Marathon des Sables covers 240 km of desert, from the continuously changing sand dunes of your vision of a desert to the rocky hills often found in actual deserts. This is the apex of competitive long distance running. It is true that there are longer running races but the conditions of this race, a desert, ensures that the runners are good and tired at the end of each day. Each day see's the racers running anywhere from 22 km's to 85 km's in temperatures that range from warm to 50°. Not only do you have a short period of running every day but you are also required to carry everything you need with you. From a sleeping bag to an anti-venom pump to your food. The only thing the organizers give you is water. Oh, and medical aid. You are also provided with a place to put your sleeping bag, your own set of rocks. You will have to leave them behind. Now remember - Left foot, Right foot then Left foot again...
